Can Headsets Spread Ear Infection?

Yes. Call handlers wear a headset all day, every day. Employers must ensure it is fully adjustable, cleaned and checked regularly, repaired immediately, if necessary, and not shared.

The UK Health and Safety Executive advises "There may be an increased risk of infection because headsets are worn so intensively. The issue of headsets to individuals is strongly recommended. If sharing from a poll of headsets is unavoidable, then each call handler should be issued with their own personal ear pads and voice tubes."

Pooling headsets should be avoided, as it leads to the risk of cross-infection.
